Your customers don't blame the factory. They blame you.
I've said this in meetings and gotten some side-eye for it: when an inverter with your brand on it fails, your customer doesn't call the manufacturer in China. They call you.
Not the cell supplier. Not the guy who soldered the MOSFET. You. Because to the end buyer—whether that's an installer running a solar mini split ac job or a distributor reselling phase 3 power converters—you are the brand. You picked the product. You put it in the box. Your logo is on the spec sheet.
And yet I still see too many B2B buyers treat this as a price decision. They pull quotes from three inverter oem candidates, compare unit cost line by line, and figure "the customer won't know the difference."
Will they, though? Three years in, when the 2000w micro inverter on a rooftop array has quietly dropped output and the homeowner is asking why their electricity bill went back up—do you think the customer cares which factory made it?
They care that it has your name on it.

I review deliveries for a living. The pattern repeats: a buyer saves $8–15 per unit on an inverter systems order, feels good about the margin, and then three to nine months later the support tickets start rolling in from installers.
Here's the rough math from one case I still use as a training example. We sourced a batch of 3 phase motor to single phase converter units from a vendor that came in about 9% below our usual supplier. Over 2,400 units, that's roughly $21,000 saved upfront.
Then the field failures started. About 2.3% of the batch failed within eight months—nearly triple our normal rate.
What did that cost?
- Return shipping and handling on 55 units: ~$4,100
- Replacement units at higher unit cost (rush order): ~$9,600
- Two engineer trips to a distributor's site: ~$3,200
- One reseller that quietly moved to a competitor and stayed there: priceless
Net result? We were about $18,000 in the hole on a decision that "saved" $21,000. That's before anyone counted the internal hours.
And the real damage wasn't the money—it was that our regional distributor stopped trusting our QC claims for the next two years.
The stuff nobody puts in the RFQ
Here's what I've learned after four years of reviewing spec sheets and physical samples: the specifications you write down are maybe 60% of what determines whether a supplier is actually safe to partner with. The other 40% lives in things nobody thinks to put in the RFQ.
Things like:
Batch consistency. First-article samples can look great. The question is whether unit #1,400 off the same line behaves like unit #12. Honestly, I'm not sure why some OEM partners nail this and others don't—my best guess is it comes down to how much they invest in inline testing versus end-of-line spot checks.
Documentation honesty. Certificates are easy to print. Certificates that survive a third-party audit are not. I've seen phase 3 power converter spec sheets list a standard that the actual tested unit would have failed on insulation clearance.
Support during a problem, not during a sale. Any vendor replies promptly when you're placing an order. The suppliers worth keeping are the ones who pick up when you're telling them a shipment has an issue.
I still kick myself for not documenting one vendor's verbal promise on thermal derating back in 2023. If I'd gotten it in writing with a reference sample, we would have had legitimate grounds to push back on an $11,000 replacement order instead of eating it ourselves.
Why I think the "just source cheaper" playbook is getting riskier
The B2B energy storage and inverter market has gotten crowded. Buyers have more options than ever, which sounds great, but it also means more suppliers are competing primarily on price. When price becomes the only differentiator, quality gets quietly compressed.
Then add regulatory pressure on top. Environmental claims on battery storage products, for example, are now subject to tighter scrutiny. Per the FTC's Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), any claim like "recyclable" or "eco-friendly" on packaging has to be substantiated—and if a component inside your inverter systems isn't actually recyclable in most markets where you sell, that claim becomes a liability, not a marketing asset.
Compliance is part of the product. It's not a sticker you add later.
So when I evaluate an inverter oem partner, I'm not really asking "how good is the box?" I'm asking three questions:
- Does this unit actually do what the datasheet says, tested independently?
- Will the next 5,000 units behave like the sample I'm holding?
- If something goes wrong, will my customer's first impression of my brand survive it?
That last one is the whole game.
"But my customers only care about price"
I've heard this argument a hundred times. And I get it—in a market where everyone is comparing line items, price feels like the only thing you can control.
But here's the thing. When someone's solar mini split ac installation fails in month four because the inverter couldn't handle the load spike, do they call you back and say "well, at least it was cheap"? Or do they call you back and ask for their money?
The price objection isn't really about price. It's about trust. Customers who feel confident in the product will pay more. Customers who don't feel confident will haggle, and then leave at the first sign of trouble anyway.
Cheap doesn't buy loyalty. Reliable does.
Quality is your second sales pitch—whether you plan for it or not
I'm not saying go buy the most expensive option every time. I'm saying stop treating quality as a cost line and start treating it as the thing your brand is actually built out of.
Every inverter systems shipment, every 2000w micro inverter, every 3 phase motor to single phase converter box you send out is doing marketing work for you—either for or against you. The customer unwraps it, installs it, uses it for years, and forms a judgment about your company based on what happened.
You don't get to control that judgment later. You only get to control it now, at the sourcing decision.
That's why integrated solar and storage manufacturers that invest in compliance-focused design and global market readiness—rather than racing to the bottom on unit price—are the ones I'd bet on long term. Not because their products are always the cheapest. Because their products don't force their partners to apologize.
